Do I need a car inside Palmetto Dunes?
Helpful but not essential during shuttle season. The free Dunes Buggy runs April through September connecting the beach, dining, the Tennis Center, and Shelter Cove Harbour — call for pickup, about 10 minutes. Bikes cover the resort easily on 5+ miles of shaded internal paths. You'll want a car for grocery runs (Kroger and Publix are about 10 minutes away) and anything beyond Shelter Cove.
What's the deal with the 11-mile lagoon?
Palmetto Dunes' interconnected freshwater lagoon system is genuinely unique on Hilton Head — no other community has it. You can rent kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards from Hilton Head Outfitters and paddle for hours. Kids fish off the bridges. There's no full grocery inside the gates, so plan your first stop on the way in or use the General Store for essentials and famous cinnamon rolls.
Is Palmetto Dunes a good fit for families?
Yes — it's one of the most family-active resorts on the island.
