Beach & access
The Atlantic is the same Atlantic — both neighborhoods sit on the same continuous, hard-packed, gently sloping beach that Hilton Head is known for. What differs is the scene at the access point.
Coligny / Forest Beach centers on Coligny Beach Park, the island's flagship public beach. It's the most amenitized access on Hilton Head: showers, restrooms, changing rooms, the iconic line of beach swings, dancing fountains kids run through, and the Town's free beach-wheelchair loaner program in season. It also gets the island's biggest crowds at peak — that's the trade for being where everything is. The stretch runs roughly a mile and a half, busiest at the park and calmer as you walk north or south.
Folly Field trades the scene for space. Its two access points — Folly Field Beach Park and the adjacent Driessen Beach Park — reach the sand by boardwalk through a strip of coastal forest, with picnic shelters, restrooms, a playground, and easy parking. It's among the least-crowded public access on the island: the beach you can actually find space on in July. Strong walkers and shell-hunters tend to prefer this quieter north-island sand.
Tide note for both: low tide exposes a wide, firm flat that's excellent for walking and biking, and the swim depth stays shallow well out — reassuring with little kids, occasionally a hike to real swimming water at dead low.
Walkability & dining
This is where the two neighborhoods actually split — and for a lot of renters, it's the whole decision.
Coligny / Forest Beach is the most walkable place to stay on Hilton Head, full stop. Coligny Plaza is the island's de-facto downtown: dozens of shops and restaurants, surf shops, ice cream, coffee, a little mini-golf, and groceries, with more dining along the surrounding blocks. Sea Crest and Breakers sit literally across the street from it — far more on-foot variety than you'll find behind the gates at Sea Pines or Palmetto Dunes. The Tiki Hut at the Beach House hotel, right on the sand, is the closest thing the island has to nightlife: live music and beach volleyball at sunset. Lowcountry Celebration Park — playground, food trucks, events lawn — is a short walk inland. You can genuinely park the car on arrival and not touch it until checkout.
Folly Field is the opposite, and you should go in knowing it. From most Folly Field condos there's no walkable dining — a car isn't really optional. The payoff is quiet, but dinner means a five-to-ten-minute drive, most often to Shelter Cove Harbour (ELA's on the Water, Scott's Fish Market, San Miguel's, and a cluster of others, plus the seasonal Tuesday-night HarbourFest fireworks). The one on-foot exception is Admiral's Row, which sits inside the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort and has a casual bar and restaurant on the property.
For families
Both neighborhoods are family beaches, but they suit different ages and temperaments.
Folly Field is the easier base for little kids and nap schedules. It's contained and calm, the beach is uncrowded, and the resort complexes carry the kid load: the Beach and Tennis Resort has multiple pools and free tennis, Sea Cloisters has a big oceanfront pool plus a kiddie pool, and Driessen Beach Park has a playground. Less stimulation, fewer crowds, more predictable afternoons — with the tradeoff that any outing beyond the beach needs the car.
Coligny is the winner for families who want the kids entertained on foot. Everything is walkable: the playground and events at Lowcountry Celebration Park, ice cream and mini-golf at Coligny Plaza, the beach swings, and the Sandbox children's museum a few minutes away. Older kids and teens love being able to walk to food and shops without a parent driving. It's busier and more stimulating — the right kind of chaos for some families, a bit much for others.

Folly Field reads residential and understated — the "locals' side."
